Bennett, who errived recently from Wellington, has come Home specially to procure a new steamer for employment in tbe coartal dairy trade of New Zealand. He h«s communicated with some of the principal builders in tha North of England, and on the Clyde, and is now awaiting tbs arrival of tenders for her construction. The new steamer is being built for the Patea Shipping and her work will consist mainly in carrying refrigerated butter and dairy Traduce from Patea to Wellington. She will be only a small ligM draught steamer, this being necessary to erable her to enter the Patea River. Her name is to be tbe Kapiti—after tbe is'and of that name lying off the west coa*t of the Wellington province Bhe is to carry atout 120 tons of butter on the prescribed light draught, and that will just suit the purpose of the company. She will nave bsrtbs and accommodation for six passengers, but the owners are ■ot counting upon carrying them as a rule Most of the people prefer to travel between i Wellington and Patea bv rail. The steamer will be we'l fitted np; will have nlectric li?ht all through; ventilating machinery, and the usual modern appliances. Her engines will be 280-b.p. and she will be able to steam on the average nine knots and a-nalfper hour When she is fully loaded sne will not draw more than Blt. of water. Mr. Bennett hopes to have delivery by September 1. There is a gocd deal of competition ju»t now in the shippins trade, as things are rather slack, and so he has b»en able to secure promises of very quick delivery. He will go out with her himself as chief engineer, a*d quit* expects to be able to get away b? the date mentioned.
