At the last meeting of the Education Boird thn fcllowirg letter was read from the Inspec'or-Geoeral:— The secretary Education Boiri, Now Plymou'h,—ln reply to your mpiniMndum of the 30'b ultra" cov.-rinf; a copy of the Teacher*' Sell ction Committe's report, on the snafus r f the W xst Tnfan-s' School, I havs to inform you tl'at the prosonfc arrangement uny he continued till the 31st Dec*mbi>r, 1 1903. The Board his not, however, in stating the c se, taken into consideration the increased attendance at the Central School during the March quarter. If this incense is taken into consideration the Board will find that if the Central and Wts 6 Infants' were treated as sspirate schools, teaching all the standards, no charge would be made either in the staff or in the salaries at the former school, while at the latter both staff and salaries wnild bn increased. If, on the other hmd, the Board decided to treat the West Infants' as a side school, no decrease voutd ba mide in the present staff, though a Rmill decrease in salary would be made in the ca«e of two assistants. The Boird his, I thiuk, ov<rlo~>ked the facl that either an extra pupil-t°acbcr may be added to tbe a'aff on account of the side schoo l , or the stlary of an a'S Stant increased by £35. G. HoaBIN. Iti reference tn the afcovi*, it wts pointed out by the Selection Committee thx.t when drawing up their report the committee bad no" the attendance of the March qnartpr beforo them. The other point* raised ha'l been considetetf, but the depattment had overlooked tbe fact that a large numbsr of chiMiv/r. attending the Central School would attend the West Irfanes' School if it wts made a full standard school.
