The Standards Durban correspondent states that the proposal of Sir Albert Hiue, Premier of Natil, that if the ne" territories were immediately annexed Natal might make her own terms of peace is generally condemned by the newspapers, on the fround tha v the Imperial Government is the only authority to discus* terms with the •nemy. The Daily Express states that Lord Walieley baa returned from South Africa with pessimistic ideas, owing to the obstinacy and ignorance of the Boers on the veldt. j Mastehton, May 5. News has reached here by private letter that over 100 members of the Seventh Contingent were left behind at Durban, when thu transport Cornwall left for Now Zealand.
Welungtok, May 6. The Acting-Premier is advised as] follows from South Africa:—"A. L. H. D*y, of Christcharch, Eighth Contingent,* dangerously ill, having beer, injured internally at Vaalbank on May 2nd, through falling from his horse ; B. E. Anslow, Wellington, and Conlen, Oamaru, both of the Ninth Contingent, both ill, the former from dysentry, the latter from rheumatic fever. No change in the condition of Lieutenant Ligcelles, Napier. Present whereabouts of JBartilJ, formerly of RimingtonV Guides, unknown. John Mackay, Kiverton, Seventh Contingent, and G. A. Fraser, Wellington, Kixfh Contingent, both convalescent. John Ashton, Dunedin, Seventh Contingent, bai*. recovered and rejoined his regiment, John Considine, Auckland, Seventh Contingent, progressing favourably. Bush McDonald, Eighth Contingtn', end S. E. Whitta, Makuri, both with the regiment and well."
