LOCAL AND GENERAL.
During the winter months Messrs Ambury Brothers drapery establishment will be closed at 5.30 every evening, except Satu*<lay, when it will close at 9 o'clock. We understand on good authority that Mr W. S. S. Medley, of the firm of Medley and Wright, has been appointed Deputy Official Assignee, a pnst which lias temporarily been tilled by Mr (Jeiard, of the h«ad office, Wellington, who has won sucli golden o-oinion during his all too short stay here. There is no doubt that the appointment of Mr Medley will be most favourably received, as he is deservedly popular, a*d has shown that he possesses considerabla business ability. Messrs Govett and Quilliam will shortly take over tli9 mtjor part of Mr Samuel's practice. It is difficult to know which of the parties to congratulate most oil the arrangement, but we are sure that in no better hands could Mr Samuel's important practice be placed th m those to which it will be entrusted. Mr 'i'hotoai Roberts, late officer in the Hudda d Park< r service, has boen appointed storemau at the Aioturo* Freezing Works. A young man named Charles Robert. Donnelly, who had been previously convicted at Wellington as a rogue and vagabond, received a further sentence at, Napier, for r».ceinng goods and money by false pretences. He represented himself aa n lieutenant in tbe Royal Navy, ingratiating himself in select circles. Mounteny Jeph3on, a passenger to the colony by the Warrimoo on Aj!. ii 23rd, was fined £5 and costs at Wellington on MondaT for failing to report himself m the specified time in terms of the regulations under the Public Health Act. fir McArthur, 8.M., |intimated that ths penalty in future would I be severe. On Sunday morning a noise resembling ' the boom of » big gun was heard in Ohristcburch, and it was feared another disaster had occ ired at Cheviot. This, however, was not com ct. The theory is advanced that the noise was caused by a meteor.
Arrangements in connection with the Taranaki Rifles' annual ball, to be held on cironation night, June 26th, are well in hand. A strong committee of ladies has been formed, in whose capable the supper arrangements should prove fully up to the mark of former years, Mr Cottier's orchestra has been engage 1. to provide the music, and during the first part of the programme will include ten performers. The Philharmonic Society will give a concert at St. Mary's Hall on Tuesday, l2th instant, when some excellent music may be expected. The Wanganni Chronicle is now isued as an eight-page paper. We have to acknowledge raceipt of a complimentary season ticket from the secretary of the Clifton Football Club, Mr H. Hpurdle. We wish the club a prosperous season.
The Chief Dairy Commissioner, Mr J. A, Hansel! a, is expected in New Plymouth to-day. The promenade concert on Thursday night, to be held in the Drill Hall, should suit all tastes. As far hs we under«tand there will be both band and orchestral besides solos. We also understand that the management have mate arrangements with Mrs Stuimey regarding refreshments during the evening of each concert, also arrangements have been made with the 'buses to run froin Fitzroy and South-road, returning immediately after the concert. At the Wellington Supreme Court Robert Mayberry was found guilty of robbery at Newman, aud sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment. Harti Harenata and Kric Wat kins, who pleaded uuilty to theft and false pretences respectively, were admitted to probation Thomas O'Connor was acquitted on a charge of stealing a purse. About. 100 permits have been issued by the Colonial Secretin's department to persons going to South Africa. Dr. Pomare, Native Health Officer, remains in the Hot Lakes district for several days to advise Ilia natives with regard to sanitation. A great improvement h<>s already been effected in Ohinemutu and Wliakarewarewa by Dr. Pomare. From Kofcorua Dr. Pomare proceeds to Tauranga, and thence to Huntley to attend a native meeting thereon, The total number of patsengers carried on tha New Zealand railwavs during the year raided 31st March waa 7.35G,1Gti, an increase oi 1,112,543 over the ligures for 1901. The number c.f season tickets increased from 82,921 to 100,778. Mr Thompson, of the Land's Parchass Department, has in Stratford to go into tho question of purchasing land in the Hairoa for the construction of the StratfordWhangamotnona railway. Mr El', M.H.R., addressed a public meeting at Timaru on Monday night, on the subject of Stale banking, when a favourable resolution ' was carried. Mr Laurensen, M.H.K., also spoke.
