EDUCATIONAL FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES.

At a meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day, it was mentioned ' that teacbW salaries under the colonial scale had increased from between two and three hundred pounds per month to over .£I6OO a month. It was resolved to apply to the Government for an extra capita'ion of ninepsnee, which will yi«W £175 a year, an amount; tha* will still leave the Board unable to meet presring requirements. Inspector Harkness reported that in the OpararaKaramea district a household school attended by twenty ehildren is conducted in a slab building with earthen floor, originally a cowshed, the door being fastened with a strip of cowhide, and the light cf day coming through the chinks between the slabs. He urged the Board to remedy this, but as its balance is to small the Board had to hesitate be'ore taking action in view of pressing needs elsewhere.
