MR BEWLEY IN EXPLANATION.

Sib,—la your report of the discussion on harbour matters at the Chamber of Commerce on Monday night, I ro--1 gret that you have incorrectly made me express myself in a manner, in referring to farmers, which, if correct, would be decidedly offensive acd uncalled for. I recognisn that the false imprnesioa conveyed is due to the necessity for condensation in your report. In speaking in support of the motion, I referred purely to the ignorance that existed on harbour matters, and instanced that many ratepayers wers under the impression that the present rate would cease on the maturity o£ the loan, and also raferred to the oft repeated error that; rates have bean spent on harbour inaintanance. I spoke of these obvious j and astounding errors as showing thu; necessity for gathering all the inl'or-! niatioc in support of harbour extension i in as clear a form as possible. As a j bush settler uir sooae seventeen years, I I would be tha last to express such an j opinion of my fellow settlers. I have been very pleased to th»i formation of the Farmers' Union, enabling, as ic does, the individual intelligence to make itself heard, which has previously been helpless for want of organised expression,—l am, etc , i Walter Kewlef. | [We are pleased to give Mr Kewiay'aj letter insertion ; at the sime time Mr Bewley'd sympathies wifh country settlers are to well known tnat we feel I sure no one would believe him capable j of speaking slightingly of them.—Ed.] |
