Sleepers to be of the exact dimensions of 7ft. by Bin by sin., ut least one half heartwood, free from bate, large knots, shakes, and other defects. They may he either sawn or hewn, bat must be truly rectangular in share and out of winding, sawn square at ends, and the hewn sleepers must be neatly dre«sed. Tb*y must be cut from large trees (no honeicombed or burnt timber will be accepted), to he stacked as directed, and to be approved and passed by the Railway Inspector. Sleepers will be inspected in the bush) if so required by the suppliers, but no Inspector will be sent to pass a less number than 250.
On receiving notice of sleepers being ready for inspection, the District Engineer, Wanganui, will send an Inspector to pass and brand them. After the sleepers hav« been inspected and branded the supplier must deliver them at the railway station or siding at which he offered to supply; after such delivery has been made the lnpector will give the supplier his certificate, and for each as have passed inspection payment will bs made within fourteen days, or as near as may be, of the Inspector's certificate having been given, Twenty-five per cent, of the number undertaken to be supplied, to be delivered by the end of May, 1902, fifty per cent, by the end of July, 1902, and the whole by the 31st October. 1902.
NOTK.—As the sleepers are required tor creosoting, attention is specially directed to the necessity of their being nbsolutely in accordance with the specification, particularly as to shape and size, failing which they will not be accepted. 18 2124w19 BY ORDER.
