CORRESPONDENCE.
[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our correspondents.] THE GAMBLING EVIL. TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I noticed in your Saturday morning's issue that a raid bad been made by the Auckland police and thst a number of parasites had bnen arrested; so far so good, but what! a>e the New Plymouth police up to when they alloiv bstting to go on day after day quite openly. One has only to pass along our main street on any day in the week when they will notice several ef the betting fraternity, and they arcnot at all particular who they make their bets with, be he a Chinaman or a youth, as well as other people, it is all the same to them so long as they cm rake in the coin and so save themselves from doing a dajf's work. When rac.is! are on in any part of the colony, the crowd of betting men is increased, and on Saturday afternoon last, .is I passed along, fully a score of the hookies and their dupes -were loitering about the path, apparently awaiting the arrival of results from somewhere. If street betting is illegal, why is it not stopped ? —I am, etc., Citizen.
