The Trades and Labour Conference at Auckland unanimously resolved that every workmen have at least one day's rest in the stveti. The Gevernment will be urged to ( legislate in that direction. The Governor leave* for Onehunga in the Tutunekai this (Thursday) afternoon and intends to stay about two months in the Auckland district. Lady Ranfurly and family will rejoin his Excellency after spending a few dajs in the Rangitikei district.
Dr. Mason, the chief health officer, states that during the last twelvfi n. onths the Department Ims baen unable to find a plagueiofeoted rat in the colony. He emphatically declares it is only through the agency of infected rats, or fleas from infected rats that the plague is likely to be brought here, and therefore that rats should be destroyed in every possible way. We understand. that the shopkeepers in town will obscrce the usual half-holiday to-day (Thursday.) On Saturday Mr Newton King will sell by auction at his marc a large quantity of blankets, sheets, stretchers. crockery, etc., ii«ed orly during band content week, and therefor* as good as new. Thi premises of Messrs Skeates Brothers, jewellers, Devon-street, will be open for business as usual on Thursday morning. Trains leave New Plymouth station to-day, connecting with steamers mentioned below as follows:—6 a.m., Rotoiti (froai north); 8.10 a.m., Takapuna (frcm south) 11J 0 a.m., Rotoiti (lor south); 8.20 p.m , Tu.uapuna (for north.) A train will leave for thf breakwater, returning at 5 p.m. The Eginont County came into existence by Act of Parliament on Tuesday. The election of the County Council will shortly take place. We wish the new county a successful and prosperous career. A heavy thunderstorm passed over the Wanawatu district on Wednesday afternoon with fine refreshing showers.
In connection with the funeral of the late Mrs Hodder, tha Rev. Lavrry should have read Rev. i.ochore, of Stratford. We are also requested to say that although much in sympatuy with them Mrs Hodder wa» not a member of the Wesleyan Ohurch. The electric light was used at the breakwater on Wednesday Right and was voted by those on the wharf a great success. The lamps ar* well placed and give a capital light, and the Board and t.he contractors are to be congratulated on the success ot the installation. The lamp globes are of nice design and have rather ap attractive appearance.
The tender of Mr Steele, New Plymouth, has beei accepted for a nsw hotel at Bltham far Mr J. Hawkins, Normanby, in the sum of £2720, the building to have 34 rooms. At the Police Cenrt on Wednesday tha adjourned case Inspector of Stock v. Samuel Ofcauman, a case brought under the Noxious Weed Act, 1900, of allowing ragwort to grow on his property, was heard. The case had been adjourned to allow the Inspector to visit the property, defendant having stated there was little or no ragwort growing there.
