The Daily News. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 1902. THE ALL-RED CABLE.
The first link in the construction of the cable uniting Great Britain and her colonies in tbe South Pacific has bees forged and placed in position, and is, as remarked by Sir Joseph Ward iu his telegram to the Mayor, which appears elsswhere in this issue, a great historical event. The dream of states--1 men and patriots in this colony, Australia, and at Home, has for years been the construction of a cable uniting every portion of the British jEmpira, entirely under British control. So far as these colonies are concerned this will shortly be accomplished. We feel sure every one in New Zealand will respond very heartily to Sir Joseph Ward's invitation to join him in rejoicing in the success so far achieved In a few days Norfolk Island and Fiji will be in telegraphic communication with this colony, and doubtless before long the Islands lately annexed to New Zealand will also be joined. What this means to the trade of the colony is hard to say, but it is certain to mean a great increase of trade and hasten the time when New Zealand will become, as she is destined to do, the head of a great Island Confederation. That the All-Bed Cable will be a great factor in building up Imperial interests in these southern seas must bs admitted. No man has worked harder to bring this about than Sir Joseph Ward, and he deserves the hearty congratulations of the whole people at the succeis which hna an far AhfandArl Viia +.nffor>nra
