A deputation from the Chnsnber of Commerce waited on Mr Barton to ask for consideration of Australian trade in the New Hebridi s. It referred to the dangerous compoiition by Frev;ch traders in New G'akdcnia, and pressed for tbe appointment of a British R-si-dent. Better f .cilit'es for the employment of native labour wcrn asked for.
Mr Birton, in reply, Baid ba < ; xp"cted a Resident wrmkl b's appointed im«;ediatily. He did favour ;i Custom l ! agreement wiih tie Hebrides, t r.fc was anxious to inctease British influence therd by all legitimate means.
