FAREWELL TO MR MARFELL.

A test enjoyable fruit social was held in Wniteley Memorial Hall on Monday? evening udder the auspices of the Prohibition L'ague to afford Christian and Temperance workers an opportunity of farewelliog Mr Marfell, the president of i he Leslie, who is leaving New Plymouth for Toko, where he.hao taken up land. All the congregations in tonen were represented. The chair w«s taken by Mr Gaukrodger, secra'ary of th« Prohibition League, Mr Marf.fl being seated on his right. The annual. report and statement of the League waa re id,' and was very *stM»ctory. In speaking to tbe adoption of ibe report, Mr Marfell urged more vigorous action and the appointment of an agent to make a house-to-house vi-it througoufc the proviso", distributing prohibition literature, and in other ways getting in toaoh with the electors. He leferred to the very great services rendered to the cause by Mr GiUircdgir, and hoped the coming struggle would see victory crown their efforts. After a few remarks by Mr Gauk« rodger,

Mr C. B. Bellringer spoke of tb« valuable services rendered to the cease by Mr Mai ftil, whe, he was sorry tear see, was leaving. Mr Marfell bad made an excellent president, and made no mistakes, and had deterred every praise. Mr H. Goodacre ssooidtd ths motion, and pointed out that tbar* was plenty of work where Mr Marfell wag going. The liquor traffic was vary much alive at Stratford and Toko, mi thtre was no fear of Mr Marfell having nothirg i., do. It was encouraging to know tha 1 : they had the support of a good solid band of voters, but at the sime rime they must b* up and doing if ; they hope to be suoies-ful. Ht heartily endorsed the motion. Mr Collis and the Rev. Nixon supported the motion, the latter expressing the opinion tint a g>eit deal of Mr Marfell's success was due to Mrs M«rfell.

Mr M'trfell returned thanks, and especially thanked them for their refereuci to Mrs M trfell, who was a true helpmate to him. He was not going so far away. He drove through from Toko on tiatuiday and it only look four hours. He hoped every blewog and p-ospeii'y wuuld attend them and success at the next ekotion.

During th« evening a violin solo was given by Mr Gaukrodger, a oornet solo by Mr Donovan, and songs were sung by Mrs Le \ Miss Goodacre, and Miss Nixon, MUs Gallia presiding at ths piino. A plentiful supply of beautiful t'mit wa« also handed round.

The usuil meeting of the Prohibition League was then held.
