The adjourned meeting of the Poultry, Pigeon and Dog Society takes place this evening at the formers' Club. At the annual meeting of the Harbour Board the accounts, receipts, and expenditure for last year as printed and laid on the table, were paused. At the meeting of the Harbour Board y«iterday Mr. J. B. Speaking at a banquet to Sir Joseph Ward at Onehuaga last week Hon.' W. T. Jennings, M.L.0., advocated a reduction of steamer fares between Onehunga and Mew Plymouth. The appointment of Mr. J. B. Sir Joseph Ward left Auckland yesterday j for Aratapu, where he was to deliver a political address in the evening, The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Monday passed a vote of thanks to Mr. D. O'Brien, of the Criterion Hotel, for a donation ef £4, £2 for the new narses' home and £2 for the Old Peoples' Home. At a publie meeting at Wellington on Tuesday a resolution was passed infaTOur of recognising the Premier's patriotic services by the presentation of a testimonial and pnrse of sovereigns, a committee being appointed to carry out the object.
Mdlle. Dolores' experiment of giving recitals with the assistance only of an accomplished pianist has proved a complete success. Her concerts are said to be one ol the delights of civilisation. Whether in oratorio, ballad, or brilliant Italian airs her voice is heard equally to advantage, and hei expressive delivery is at once a musical and intellectual treat.
The Maaawatu Railway Company recsibly refused the Qoveinsaent permission to insrect its line in connection with the proposed parchase of the property. The Government then decided to avail itself of other powers, and on its behttlf Mr Coom, ofcief engineer of working railways, and Mr Hales, engineer in chief, are now making an inspeotion. It is understood Inspector Ellison of Ohristchurch will succeed Inspector Pender in charge of the Wellington police station, when the latter retires next month.
At a crowded patriotic demonstration in the Town Hall, Melbonrne, resolutions moved by Messrs Barton and Roid, and supported by the State Premier and the leader of the State Opposition, were carried, expressing appreciation of the Imperial Government's polioy in the war in South Africa, and confidence in-the humanity and valour of the people and soldiers of the Empire,
Mr Jellicoe has written the Minister of Justice asking for inquiry by Boyal Commission (he suggests Mr Justice Williams) into the dicipline and management of the Wellington prisons. He asserts the Terrace and Halswell prisons are overcrowded, and lacking in means for the proper classification of prisoners, and also that the dicipline is faulty, and medical attendance insufficient. At Auckland on Tuesday, James Kerr Boyle jwas sentenced to two years imprison? ment for forgery of a valueless cheque.
