I In the Housb of Commons Lord Cranborne said that Lord Pauncefote, lat ths verbal suggestion of his diploj matic colleagues at Washington, convened a meeting of ambassadors on April 14th, 1898, The British Government informed Lord Pauncefote that the proposed collective note was injudicious, and that Gr*at Britain would take no action, The Govern- 1 (ment was not aware then of the viewß of Germany, | The Washington correspondent of the Times states that s Lord Pauncefort * and Mr Holleben were the only ambassadors at the meeting, and that Lord Pauncefote tried to moderate the views of his colleagues.
