THE JANET WALDORF SEASON.
Reports from Wanganui state that Miss Janet Waldorf and her brilliant cimpuny opened to a full beu*e on Sa urday evening, the audience including neaily 200 students from the Wanc»n«i Collegiate S'hool, who keenly appreciate the performance. The season of this company is to commeno3 at the Theatre Koyal on Friday evening with a grand production of| Sbtkeipmre's immortal comedy "The Merchant of Venice," in which Miss Waldorf and ber co-artis's made such a "hit" in Wellington recntly, the fall of the curtain being the cue for one of the most enthusiastic arenas ever seen inside the wal's of the Opera House, It was said by the press to be one of the finest representations of the play ever given in- the colony. Miss Waldorf as Portia fascinated all present with her magnetic personality and fine acting, and as Shyloek, Mr Norval Macgregor proved himself to be a sound character-actor Of great dramatic force. The fatuous trial scena was a triumph both for him and Miss Waldorf, who were accorded a double recall. The rest of the company lent material assistance, the Biesmio of Mr Lawreece Hawray calling for more than passing attention. On Saturday evening Miss Waldorf will appear as leah in " The Jewess," a,n intensely dramatic play that has ever been a popular bill, and on Monday, the last night of the season, Bulwer Lytton's great drama "The Lady of Lyons," will be staged for the first; time for many year*. The box plan was opened at the Colonial Piano Company's warehouse yesterday morning, and judging from the demand for seats, the oompany should have an excellent season. Intending patrons should lose no time in booking if comfort be a consideration.
