Obituary: The Marquis of Dnfferin and Av.i. .[The lato Lord Bufferin was born in 1826, being the only sin of Baron DufFerin, an Irish Per-i , and he succeeded to the titlo in 1841, during his minority. His career, throughout, has been oneof brilliant services in those departments of the State which not only repuire exceptional talents, but bring out all that is b»st in statesmanship and diplomacy, After baiug educated at Eton aud Oxford, ha was appointed one of the late Queen's lords-in-waiting. Gnu of his fi sr. experiences was a visitto Ireland during thn famine in 1846 7, and hi. commenced the literary portion of his career \vi : h a published account of whas hj« saw in that rruly distressing journey. But it was in the arena of diplomacy tbat the late Peer was lestined to t-hin°, and from the time of his being attu hed to a mission to Vienna in 1855 until 1896, when bo re'ired |from the i diplomatic service, bis career was marked hy conspicuous ability and success. Amongst the positions he filled were the following: —British Commir-sion in Syri i (1860), Governor-General of Canada (1872-9, Ambassador at St, Peteraburgh), 187981), A_mb9.sf.adot' at Constantinople (1881, Controller of Brit'sh afftirs in Egyp l "' after Arabia rebellion (1882-3) Viietov of India(lßß4-8), Ambassador at Some (1888-91), Ambi.sador at Paris 1892-6. In addition to these appointments he was For a time UnderSecretary for India and for War, and Ohanrellor of the Duchy of L monster. The Universities of Harvard, Dublin, Oxford and Cambridge all conferred upon him an honorary degre'.
