BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Oouaoil met on Tuesday. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Doekrill), Ore. Connett, Glow, Lealand, Oollia, Garter, Tisch, Webster. Correspondence was read, whieb had been dealt with by the rariooa committees whose reports have already been published. The Borough solioitor forwarded an opinion on the subject of damage to a tombstone at the Uenui Cemetery, stating that no liability rested on the Council.—Gr. Collis moved that the opinion be ferwarded to Mr Ambridge. Seconded by the Mayor and carried. The Sanitary Inspector reported tbat the general couditioa of »he town was good, but some trouble was caused in tbe central portion of the town through householders storing refuse until they had a load. He had now arranged with several to hare the refuse removed regularly by the Borough workmen. The kerosene in store was: On recl'oimed land, 141 cases; in other scores, 273 cases.

In moving the receipt of the report, Or. Tiech suggested that the Sanitary Inspector should examine carefully all places where fowls were kept, to see that everything was clean, and that he should have discretion in dealing with cases of dirty yards, etc., as he thought fit.

Thii wai agreed to and the report received.

Or. Carter asked how residents were taking the canvass being made to see who would agree to the removal of rubbish by a Borough cart,

The Inspectar replied that nearly all refused to have anything to do wits the matter.

The Waterworks Engineer reported that all was going well. It was necessary to have gravel, etc., ready for cleaning out the reservoir on Sunday, 16th instant. The hours of pumping during the past four weeks were 82, 84, 81 J, 85.

The Mayor stated that owiog to tbe Council being unable to get gravel, etc., the cleaning of the reservoir was postponed for a week. The report was received.

The turncock reported that 15 new J connections had been made during the month. New mains had been laid, and other services put in. He suggested that a main be laid in Kingstrest, from Brougham - street to Egmont-street, with a fire-plug midway.—Received.

The Building Inspector reported tbat most of the boarding-houses had complied with his request for fire-escapes, Two, however, were still without escapes, and he had decided to take measures to get his orders carried out ii something was not soon done. Tbe report waß received.

i The Borough Foreman wrote urging I that persons using hoses in cleaning down the fronts of business premises should be requested to use the water at half pressure, as otherwise the footpaths are damaged.—The matter was referred to the Works Committer.

The Works Committee's report was then read and adopted. The Mayor moved that the plans of the Imperial Hotel ba referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. - Seconded by Or. Webster, and carried.

The reports of the Kesetveo, Fire Prevention, and He»lth Oommittees were read aod adopted, excepting the portion of the sicond one, dealing with the introduction of the telephone connection between the town and the waterworks, which was referred to thai Finance Committee. I

Thi Mayor then referred to the fact that it was generally admitted that on Che occasion of the recent fire in Devonstreet the Fire Brigade had displayed very great skill in saving the town from a serious conflggratioa. He moved that the thanks of the Oouncil be tendered to the captain, officer*, and men of the Biigade.

Tbe resolution was carried, Or. Collis fupptementing the Mayor's remarks by rtating that he had been spoken to by gentlemen from outside centres who were highly pleased at the smartness ibown by the Brigade on the occasion in question. Accounts were passed totalling £U7 5s 11 d. The bank overdraft was stated to be £2634 15* Bd. Receipts during the month were: - Rates £149 3s lOd, library subscriptions, etc., £42 3s 6d, rents £SO, auctioneers' licenses £4O, eals of horse and diay£3o B*, sundries £l6 4s. Tbe Mayor thought tbe Council should depute tbe Works Committee to wait on the Ojtfnty Council and explain its proposals in regard to tbe Henui bridge, without prejudice to the Borough Council's legal position In the | matter. i Cr. Tisch withdrew his notice of motion regarding the appointment of an outside committee to consult with the Council in matters of importance to the borough. He then brought up his motion, of which notice had been given, relative to the cabstand. Pe thought the cabs should be distributed over the streets. Eventually Crs. Webster, Collis, and Tisdb were appointed a committee to inquire and report on tbe matter to the Council. i The Council adjourned.
