COUNCIL. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION, Reefion, February 7. The annual meeting of the Westland Trades and Libour Council passed a resolution extolling the British Government on the conduct of the war. The Workers Compensation Act, Employers' Liability Act, and Arbitration' and Conciliation Act were discussed, and while admitting had conferred great benefits upon the workers, the Oomncil considered thire were some clauses in the Acts which could be amended with great advantage, specially in the direction of retaining Conciliation Boards, as provided in the original Act. With reference to section 22 of the Workers Compensation Act, the delegates weie of opinion that illegitimate should have all the rights |of legitimate persons, and in the event of d-o-th from accident those dependent ! on such a person should have the right Ito recover, and that clauses 216 and ! 217 of the Mining Act, and 52 and 53 [of the Coil Mines Act, which were [repealed by the Workers Compensation 1 Act, should be re-enacted. This is | regarded as important, as it seriously ' a fleet a claimants for damagf s in case of I accident.
INTERESTING MAORI MEETINGPER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wahqanui, February 5. An interesting native meeting concluded at Bata last night. About 300 natives were present, representing nearly all the tribea on the Wfst Coast. Hon. J. Carroll attended on Wednesday, and Rpoke hopefully of tbe native raca under recent legislation 0? the Government. Their Maori Councils were in full swing, and reports of their .work showed a general awakening to [theneeds for improved social and moral life.
