The Daily News SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1902. THE NEW PLYMOUTH RAILWAY STATION.

A few days back .we mentioned that, some very unsatisfactory rumours were j current: regarding the stoppage of the work at the New Plymouth railway station, and pointed out tbat very serious loss and inconvenience would be caused if any modification, in the way of lessening the accommodation,. was made. Our representation? were, we know, forwarded to Sir Joseph! Ward, the Minister for Railways, and I we are pleased to inform our readers j that Mr Piper, the Traffic Manager,) states that the work is to be carried I out as originally intended. Mr Piper J informs us that it was intended to Bt.op/ the work for a time, but owing to tlvj strong representations made, and th/e exceptionally heavy work with botih [goods and passengers, the whole question was reconsidered. At first it was thought that the expenditure might 'bit lessened by making some modifications, I but now Mr Piper says he has the assurance of Mr Mclntosb, the Distric* Engineer, that ib') work will be fully/ carried out. This is very gratifying J and it is pleasing to know thai thl efforts of the traffic officers, anu ou/r | own protests have had this satisfactory result. Mr Pipar further assures us that the work is to be pushed oa ja» fast as possible, and it is hoped the new good sheds in Currie-street will be used for the first time for /tho Upolu's cargo on Tuesday next. jOur readers will also be gratified to |earn [that Mr Piper is arranging foi: a regular passenger service between New Plymouth and the Breakwater, on Tbu'sdays and Saturdays for a .start. These trains will run sha ip to timetable time, and will, we feel sure, prove a great boon to man;/who enjoy a few hours in the many ba.utiful bayp in the vicinity of the Sugar Loaves, We found Mr Pipar' extremely anxious to suit the running of trains tp the requirements of the district, and make the service up to date in every respect, and we feel sure his efforts will be heartily appreciated by the travelling and pleasure seeking public.
