THE RAILWAY STATION.
Some very unsatisfactory rumours are current regarding the work in progress at the lailway station at New Ply- ! mouth. For a week or so various statements have been made to us that very serious modifications are to be made in the original plan with a view, it is supposed of reducing the oost. We have endeavoured to get at something reliable, but so far have been uuablo to do so. The local railway authorities are extremely reticent, and are unable, or unwilling, to give any informitioo. Still we tegard their attitude as anything but reassuring. One of tbe statements made to us is tint the present goods-shed is not to beremovetl and another is that instead of n new station b.Mng built the present one is to be removed. A number of smaller modifications of the original plan, are also detailed. Our information leads us to consider the position sufficiently serious to justify the Mayor and the Chamber of Commerce pressing for an i assurance that tbe work as promised will be carried out entirely. The busi-1 ness at the station is growing so rapidly that nothing less than was intended will be sufficient. Under the present arrangement the cost of handling goods is very great and can only be brought within reasonable bounds by the whole station being brought up to date. The Railway Department is > to be commended for the excellent job
