WHANGOMOMONA.

(from our own cobkespokdent.) The School Committee had arranged to hold the picnic &c. on the 20th ult., but the weather prevented this, so Hew Year's day was ohosen instead, and on this occasion the weather was excellent. A large number of parents, children and residents assembled at the school room, where refreshments were dispensed. Immediately afterwards the chairman, Mr W. Gill, assisted by the teacher, Mr Scott, distributed the prizes (books) and minor gifts. The committee gave one to each of the 29 children in the preparatory classes without competition. Tbe prizes to the standard children were as follows: —First Glass.—Examioation marks, Sidney Groves; lesson marks and second for examination marks, Muriel Izett; second for examination marks (* tie),Neil Grant; good attendance, Bertie "White; progress, Hugh Groves; award for encouragement, Willie Gleeson. Standard 11. —Examination marks, Mary Hodder; Itssoni marks and attecdance, Leah Hodder 1, Lorry Terry 2; award for encouragement, E'lward Sbeury. Standard lll.—Examination and lesson marks, Ethel Pearl Terry; examination marks, Sirah H. Davis; second prizs for lssson marks, Ruby Dirnbusch; excellent progress, Allen McOutohan. Standard IV.—Examination and lesson marks, John Hodder; examination marks and attendance, Charles Feareon ; atteadance, Bessie Hoddor, (never absent, in 1901); general proficiency, Joseph Davis; proficieucy and lesson mat ks, Vera Dornbusch. Standard V.—Award for ei c mragemen', Ohris Lemon. Standard VI. - Highest prizo to Tom Hodder (dux-of the school). Two handsome volumes wore presented by Mr F. Webb, of Kobur*tahi, one being awarded to Sarah Davis, ths girl obtaining the highest arithmetic marks in Standard 111, and the other to Sidney Groves, tbe boy who scored highest in arithmetic in Standard I.

1 Two valuable prizes presented by MrsT. Davis, of Hillside, were assigned as follows:—A crystal butter dish to the littla girl attending best over bad roads, to Lucy Davis; the other, a teapot, to Vera Dombusch, who has

shown much industry and progress, notwithstanding bad heO'h. Mr Joseph Mcfiluggage's annual priz* for industry, usually awarded to a little girl, was given to Kathleen Groves. Aft"r the prize distribution, all adjourned to the Maieo-road, our juveniU course, where a good race programme was gone through, Messrs Funnel and White were very successful as handioppers - Messrs D. Wildermsth and D. CJurtin acted as judges, and Mr Grant as starter. The attendance was 1 goo 4, and the interest taken very great.
