Jessop and Blythe bowled, the former to the end which was considerably damaged. The bowling was bo J accurate and the fielding so brilliant,! that the batsmen were disinclined to take any risks. It took twenty minutes to nuke four ions, and in half an hour Tramble. added only one. Darling got Blythe to kg for three, and then drove and cat Jessop to the boundary. At 221 Gunn relieved Jessop. Wben he •cored 59 Darling drove the ball back hard and high to Blythe, who was unftble to dutch it. Trumble, after batting an hour for six runs, hit Gunn to the leg boundary and cut him uppishly but safely to the pavilion. With 239 up Gunn changed ends, and Braund pegged away at the bad place, not, however, with bis usual blows. Lilley stood back at short stop, and Braurd rcoked in fast onts, but they did not achieve success, and Jessop relieved him. Darling bit him to the boundary, but in the same over, while trying another hit down the pound, he was brilliantly caught by Hayward at mid-on. Darting wis batting for three and a ha'f hours, and made a splendid -effort for the Australians. His defence wan splendid, with occasional well-placed hits. His •score included seven 4'e. The fifth wicket fell for 255, and then luncheon was taken, Trumble being 29. Noble joired Trumble after luncheon, Jeesop and Blythe bowling. The newcomer, batting nicely, Boon ran into double figures. At 273 Braund relieved Blythe, this time bowling his customary slows. Trumble got him to the boundary, but with the score at 287 Noble ran himself oat through starting for a run when the ball was hit -straight to Jessop at cover. "With Armstrong playing the slows "well, Braund gave tho ball to Blythe, whom Trumble bit w , for four, making him 52' after two and a half hours' .batting.! Armstrong simply kept up his wicket while Trumble made the > una. One of the hitter's strokes off Jessop was a fine one to the square-leg boundary. When Armstrong was eight, aed seven runs were wanted to win, Maclaren in ; the slips missed a difficult low chance off Blythe. The next four runs came slowly, but the match was finished with : three byes off Jessop, the Australians winning by four wickets. I • Trumble played a masterly, faultless innings of three hours duration, and | bit seven 4's. Armstrong played a steady game. The fielding throughout was exceedingly brilliant.
