£&K PBESB ASSOCIATION. Sydney, January 14. Sir William McMillan, replying to Mr. Barton's Maitland speech, scathingly denounced the Federal Ministry and its policy. He accused Mr. Barton of flagrantly violating pledge s. The tariff, he said, was not intended for the good of the country, but to catch votes. He declared that the New 1 South Wales members of the Cabinet were not representative, being dominjated by the Victorians. He compared Mr Barton's hf sitatliig action in xend | log a federal Contingent with New ■Zealand's ready response. The Com- ' monwealtb, be snid, should have offered 5000 men instead of acting so ignobly. The Government had trailed our nawlyborn flag in the d\idt. He claimed that the Pacific Islands ought to be under Federal control, but such control would be no good if we had no trade with the [lslands. j , Wilson's Promontory reports that the steamer Abergeldie picked up two boats containing 23 persons four miles off the Promontory. The Aberge'die proceeded to Sydney. The boats beioog to an abandoned ebip anchored off the island to the west of the Promontory, her nann being unknown.
