In preparation for tie leturn of the Ooutt, palaces, pagodas, and temples are gaudily painted and gilded. The walls of the Imperial city are vivid with crimson. Wooden toweis have replaced the destroyed stone towers at Chenmergate, with painted representations of cannon. The foreign Ministers have refused to use the two buildings allotted to the Legations to view the pageant, but will allow their families to occupy them. Many people declare it would ke a mistake for the Powers to be represented, as it would constitute «n act of homage to the Court. A thousand well-armed Shantung soldieis have arrived at Pekin, The Legation guards are confined to bsrraeks. Thousands of officials received the Emperor end the Dowager-Empreti at Pekin, who entered tbe city riding in yellow palanquins and accompanied by a brilliant c<valcade bearing banners and umbrellas. The rou'e, tour miles long to the palace, was lined *ith kneeling troops. Tbe Dowager taw foreigners peering down upon the procession aid bowed to them. Received 9,1.15 a m. London, January 8. The Emperor during the pageant on his return to Pekin was listless and indifferent. The Dowager was smiling and confident. Her recognition of foreigners was much commented upon. General Yuenshaiki, who exterminated Boxerism in the Shantung province, received the decoration of the Yellow Jacket. Chingte, a Boxer, has been appointed Governor of Pekin. Two of Tungfuhsiang'schuf lieutenants at the siege of the Legations accompanied (he Dowager, and are destined for high commands, A THREATENED REBELLION. Paris, Januaiy 7. Twenty thousand rebels, mostly Chinese, ex-soldiers, have congregated in Tonkin. The French general, Dodds, has threatened to tesign unless the forces he has to oppose the rebels are strongly reinforced.
