THE NKW GHARGK AGAINST MUMFORD. PES PRESS ASSOCIATION^ Ohbistchuech, January 7. The charge agaiust Mumford, late captain of the Ariadne, of attempting to bribe a witness not to give evidence against him, i* proceeding. Mrs Downing, the witness, met Mumford by appointment at the Criterion Hotel, where Mumford offered her a sum of money if she would disclaim her previous evidence, and go over to their side.

Two detectives were secreted in the room and overheard part of the conversation before Mumford discovered them. He was then arrested.
