PRISONERS AT LARGE.
FOUR MEN BSOAPR AT WANGANUI. PES PRESS ASSOCIATION, Wangahui, January 6. A good deal of excitement was caused here this afternoon by tbe escape from gaol of four men waiting trial. At the time part of thestafl was out with a hard labour gang, and the gaoler was engaged at Court. Two warders were in charge of the prison. About 3 o'clock the men assaulted Warder Steele, and locked him in a cell. Tbey then did the same with Acting-Warder Redmond. The alarm was'given by another prisoner, who rang up tbe police, and all hands turned out in pursuit. The escapees had not Deen caught up to the time of telegraphing. The mm at large are McDonald, awaiting trial for burglary at Bonnythorpe; Moores, awaiting trial for cattle stealing at Feilding; and Thurston and Harward, awaiting triil for robbery from the person in Wacganui.
