This claim on the New Zealand Shipping Company by the owners of the steamer Ahuriri and the Spit Kira Brigade for services rendered at the fire on the Waimate at Napier has been settled by the company agreeing to pay £7OO. The Ngapuhi arrived from Onehunga shortly after 10 last nisrht, having on board 280 passengers. A special train left New Plymouth at 11.45 p.m., for Wanganui, taking a good number of the travellers on. There was a very large congregation at St. Mary's last evening, when the Rev F. G. Evans gave a most interesting sermon. He referred to the sitting of the Educational Institute in New Plymouth, making specially complimentary mention of the high importance of the work done by teachers in the mental and moral training of children
