Received S, 5.7 p.m. j San Francisco, January 4. i The steamer Wallawalia, bound from I 'Frisco to Puget Sound with 36 first-1 class and 28 second class passengers, j and 60 of a crew, collided at night off Mendocino, on the Califorcian coast, with an unknown French ba:que, which rendered no assistance. The weather was hazy, with a rough sea. Lifeboats and rafts were lowered, and lifebelts distributed Tbe boats accommodated 63, and a terrible scene : ensued amongst those left on board, : Women screamed, and men and boys leapt into the sea. , The Wallawalia sank 35 minutes after the collision, 1 The officers and erew were cool and courageous throughout. < Tbe B'.eimer Daspttch rescued the occupants of the drifting boats and raCts. _ i i Twenty Boven of the passengers and crew were drownc.'.
