CONVENT SCHOLARS' CONCERT.
The favour in whiob the CbavMt ia held by the publio of New Plymouth was manifts'ed in a very pleat'iut manner on Thursday evening, when * large number of ptople assembled at the Theatre Royal to bear the MMirt given by the pupils of the Convent High School. Tbe worthy objeot for which the entertainment was inaagv* rated w«s to raise funds for providing fire-escapes at tbe Convent bnildinm, and the efforts of tbe S sten and tl» children were crowned with sueeess. Tbe programme submitted wa< 'a car* fully selected • onp, and thoroughly pleased all tastes. Misses P.pe, Stoddart, and EileenWnrf, fa the opening number, the * M«rch» Heroique " (piano and organ) displayed considerable taate, and met with a. hearty reception. The aong end choroua "If the watets oould speak," by the senior pupils was a wry vjf ingitem, b iog heartily >noo»ed. Th* next i'em, a recitation "The doll's geography lesson," by a little dot, Mist Hose Shotlander, evoked a good deal ' of amusement, and was well reoeivedt, The junior pupils were very sascMslal in the aotion song " Many yean ago," and the song and drill " Beautiful Star," were very prettily executed, th* bright dresses of.the children ha*, monising nicely. A violin do*!* Messrs Iris Dixon and IdaP&te from the "Bohemian GirL" %as nntedl with ooasidereble fexpreesion. Hims Walter# and Qrey were very soooeerful in their piano item " Ventre & Terre," as also were Misses Ihdu* and Madder (pianos), R»te and Ofttks (violins) and Qrey (organ) in lint rendering of " Ora pro nobis." K* her singing of "Two Winge," Km Kennedy received an enthosiaatie >ecall, and with u t*otims. A group of Kindergarten pupil* created a good deal of merriment ia a, dialogue "The dolly exhibition. 1 * v par ioularly pleasing itsm was tli* •otig and chorus "Th* • Flo**? ' Bells" by tbe senior which the audience applauded with vigour. Even more seccessful was the " Battledore dtill." in the graceful evolutions of which the pupila in tfc* intermediate classes showed to gnat advantage Other items, each ofwfciob wts plrtfran ly received, were:-B«oi-ta'ion " Flo's, letter," Miss Hiie ww nett; s >ng « What would you take fe me, Papj," Miss Queenie Hawkins {'' eoog "Two little blue little shoes," Miss Bva Sole; instrumental duet (two pianos) "Souvenir it Bt.
