THE BAND CONTEST.

[to the kditoi.] Sib.—As one of the principal movers in tbe forthcoming contest, I would like to say a few words io answer to the letter which appeared on the 12th, signed by the secretary of the New Plymouth T3wn Band, in which he says " as soon as we learned that it hid been decided to hold the contest in | this town, we determined to do our ib?st to mike it successful," yet at the meeting called by the Mayor to nuke arrangements for the contest, the \ Town Band was not represented. Tbe | meeting was adjourned for a week io 1 hopes of getting a larger gathering, and tbie night th«y gave an open-air conoert at the Government Buildings, | so i's very evident they must have for* gotten their first intention. The end of August a ciroular was Bent to nearly al! the bands in New Zealand, asking tbem to answer certain questions re the contest, to which they all replied (except the Town Bind). Then he goas on to state that under the ruUs of tbe N. 1.8.8. Assjcia'ion, there is «* no event in which we could compete, unless our reeds stand aeidV well, even if they did not care to put their reeds out for the test selection, there is nothing in the rules preventing them from affiliating with the Association, thereby assisting in carrying out tbe good work it is doing, or competing in the quartefe and solo competition. By doing so th y would have shown their sympathy in a practical way, also their ability as bandsm n.—l am eta.,

FBANK Niwkix, Hon. Sec. Girrison Band.
