The Maoawa'u Kail jay Company has for fome time been conteraplaii&g the replacing of the Belmont viaduct with a more substantia) structure. It is a wooden bridge spanning a deep ravine some seven miles from town, and is 160 feet io height. The first idea was to £ll in the gully with earth, but it was found that the cost would bs £ 15,000 or £1 6,000. Having heard of tbe smart work turned out by the American company, which built a bridge over tho Atbar* in q'ii<k ord«-r, the directors sent a description of what they wanted, and received complete and wonderfully exaofc drawings for a steel viaduor, otlculated to a nioety, with an intimation that the a'ruoture would be ready within a fortnight of receiving a cable ordering it. The cost Unded in Wellington, duty paid, is less than j£4ooo, and the directors have decid d to accept tbe offer.
