CENSUS RETURNS.

WHERE THE PEOPLE WERE BORN, A further census return shows that of the 772,719 white people in the colony at March 31st, 761,104, or 985 i per cent, were British subjects, 4672 being foreigners who have become naturalised. The foreign subjects totalled 11,615, or 1-5 per cent, of the whole. In Auckland district there were 837 naturalised British subjects and 3510 foreigners (2 pw cent.). In Wellington the naturalised subjc's numbered 1351 and the foreigners 2394 (1-69 per cent.). In Otago there were 545 naturalised subjects and 2230 foreigners (1-29 per cent.). The proportion of foreigners in Westland reached 4-98 per cent., and in "the Chatham Islands 2 42 per cent. Another interesting table shows the number of each nationality and the incease or decrease duiiog tbe five years since 1896. It is noticeable tbat those of English, Scotch, lush and Welsh nationalities all show a decrease, as also do all except the Canadians among those from other British po sessions outride of the Commonwealth and Fiji. Among the foreigners there is a general decrease, a notab'e exception being tbe Austrians, who have in-

creased ay ujs-71 per cent., or, numerically, from 881 to 1874. Those owning the Australian States as their fatherland all show substantial increases, the principal being West Australia 69-64 per cent., Fiji 48-34 per cent., New South Wslee4l'7s per cent., and Queensland 3636 per cent. The native born New Zoalanders hare increased by 16.86 percent., ornum*rically by 74,445.
