With respect to the, Auckland telegram re discharge of men from tbe Northern Trunk line, the Times says the statement cannot be correot, as the whole number employed on the Northern section iB less than 600. About 80 or 100 were discharged because their contracts were finished, and it was found that so large a number cannot be profitably employed. It is always usual tj reduce the number on such works at this time of tbe year. The Times fioishes by s\ying:—" The reduction?, we are assured, are not directed specially against the Northern Trunk line, and a similar policy may reasonably be exp cted on the M dland, Otago, and other line'." Mr G. Fowlds, M H 8., received a telegram yesterday from a southern member stating that he had not heard of any cmtailmsnt of work on the Midland Railway, but that he would make full inquiries.
