ANTARCTIC EXPLORING SHIP.

PER PHESS ASSOCIATION. Lyttelton, November 29. The Discovery went as far South as the ice pack, aud landed on the Macquarie. ' She has been swinging and adjusting her compafses this morning, and is still in tbe stream. The Mayors of Cbristcburch and Lyttelton and a Reception Comittea are giving a public welcome to day.

THE DISCOVERY'S FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ICE.

Chri-tchuech, November 29,

The Discovery, on the way from Cape Town, made a deviation south, entering the pack ice in lat. 63 S., long. 141 E., in order to try to in sight of Adelio Land or Olan'e Land (in Wilkes land), but this object was not attained. Baing pressed for time the vessel put about and headed for Lyttelton. A short stay was made at Macquarie leUnd, nnd a few hours spent iu collecting sea fowl and their eggs. During the run scioss soiial magnetic observations weie taki'ii continually, and whoever possible soundings were also taken. Some interesting specimens were also obtained,

The Discovery is said fohavo behaved extremely well, bjtb during her trip across and during her brief experience in the pack ice. With regard to the sensational rumour cabled that she had been leaking badly, it is laughed to scora, aud Captain Scott declares it to have been a grcss exaggeration. The vessel had been leaking, it is admitted, but not a great deal more thsn is customary in the case of a cow wooden vess 1 on her maiden trip. In any event, the ve-sel will be docked here fcr cleaning purposes, and to tighten up tho caulking—an operation mecea sary in tbe case of all new wooden vessels. It is probable aleo that during her fortnight's Btay in Lyttelton the whole of the stores will be discharged and re-loaded, and the vessel will take away with her a substantial deck-load of coal.

When oS Cape Saunders the vessel had a curious visitation. A flock of sparrows, presumably driven off tbe land by a gale, alighted upoa her. Some of tbe birds were so exhausted as to drop dead on the deck.
