A GRADING CONFERENCE.
i 4-t New Plymouth Inst Friday, the Dairy Commissioner held a conference of graders. The full dairying staff i was present—Me-srs Singleton, Ouddie, and MoGowaa (instructors), and Thornton, Johnston, Dickie, Townsend, Shirl y, DumWetoo. and Brash (gra ders). The object of the conference was to further level Up bo,th the judging and. pointing of butter and cheese, and to maintain uniformly. The reason of r.he Commissioner in bringing the grading staff together so early in the season was to educate recently appointed graders, who have had little experience at.the grading ports in the work as carried on throughout the colony. The system of work at a grading conference is as follows:-Bach official samples a parcel of butt»r, points it, and remarks o i its quality. The notes are handed to the Commissioner, who, in the event of a difference of opinion among the staff, calls for an explanation. Discussion Is emcouraged, and the. final decision arrived at mark? a standard for future viork, With the result of the g ading pleased. He found that those graders who were new to the work hid quickly fallen into line with the system. It is by such conferences as these, and by the strenuous efforts rnsda by the Commissioner to retain uniformity in the to;rk throughout the colony, that the iystem has attained such a high stmd&rd, and has come to be recognised ky the dairy produoa trade as absolutely reliable, and as mod bas ; s on which to conduct transactions io.
