There is much dissatisfaction in cricket circles over the New South Wales Association refusing Mr Maclaren's request to be allowed to appoint an umpire. It is reported that rather than submit to such arbitrary dictation, the Melbourne Club will cancel the Englishmen's match beginning at Sydney on Friday. The wicket, after beiDg rolled, was good. : Graham played with characteristic freedom, and showed some prettv cricket. When McLeod had made 10, he was cleaned bowled by Barnes with a no-ball. He took over an hour to put his score together. The batting of the Victorians on the whole was not up to the : r usual standard. The features ot the play were the excellent fieldsg of the Englishmen, and the consistently good work of the bowlers. The visitors made a good start in their second innings, i McGahay's betting was especially attrac'ive, but both he and Haywartf were let off in the field.
