Fob nearly half a century the figure of. Captain Thomas Hampton has been ft miliar to all tbe old res'dente of Now Plymouth. It is with muoh regret we hive to announoe that at the of 77 the hte Town Clerk of New Fly. mouth passed quietly away on Friday morning. Born at Londonderry (Ira* land) in 1824, he arrived in tbe colony early in 1855, and until the I tbe troubles with the nati?eg in 1800 he resided on tbe Frankley-road. It was then that he joined the militia, being appointed paymaster, and ho served throughout the war In 1885 he received the appointment of Town jCleik and held office for abjut 13 year?, when, owing to failing health, he retired. latterly, o*ing to a stroke of paralytic, he hw been but rarely ee>n, exoept when wb»«l*d out for a short while. He was awatly respected by all who kaew hiiu, end by his d ath another gap in* beta made in tbe connecting link with .the past.
