COLLIERY DISASTER.
A FATAL EXPLOSION. Received 13, 7.16 p.m. Sydney, November 13. A terrible explosion of gas occurred at the new workings of Burwood Colliery, near Newcastle. Fortunately but few men were in the vicinity at the time. It is supposed a l<mp fired a quantity of undotecte'l gas hanging to the roof. A miner named Molloy wai killed instantly, and another, Patterson, was hopelessly injured, while several others hive slight injuries. OwiDg to the excellence of the ventilation no effect was produced by after damp. Received 14, 0.56 a.m. Sydney, November 13.
Patterson i« dead. The third man, Champion, i« in a fe ions condition. Mr Brock, under manager of tie colliery, visited the spot a few minutes before the explosion, and was, with two other men, swept along the shaft. Brook received nasty cuts about the head, and a aware shock. The other only sustained slight injuries. All lights were extinguished, and there was considerable excitement for a time. A rescue party quickly arrived on the sc°ne.
