Byrne was accidentally killed, and Private Thomas Crawford severely wounded, at Gold G6wonden. Both belonged to the New Zealand Mounted?. Colonel B nson on the 22nd inst. surprised a laager at Tricbarsfonteia, capturing 37 Boere. He repulsed a heavy rear-guard attack by Grobthai's and Erasmus's commandos at Yzewarkfontein. 1 Colonel Henry expelled Nieuwhandt'B commando from a strong position at Koffyfontein, and is pursuing the enemy. j COMPENSATION FOB FOREIGNER 3. The British Government, as an act of grace, has allotted £69,559 as compensation to all foreigners, excepting Hollanders and Frenchmen, deported from South Africa. Germans receive £30,000. Mr Seddon has received the following cablegram from Lord Kitchener: —" Pretoria, October 28—Officers and men of the (Fourth and Fifth Contingents, who wish to do so, am returning to New Zealand." The Government is advised that Corporal W. J. Byrne, of the Seventh Contingent, whose mother lives at Obristcburch, died at Genrdeveriden on October 28rd from a gunshot wound in the chest; also on October 24tb, James Crawford, Seventh Contingent, who belongs to Waimate, Canterbury, accideatally and severely wounded in the right fore arm; and Alex Mitchell, Seventh Contingent, who belongs to Pleasant Point, Canterbury, dangfronsly ill of enteric fever at Mooi River on October 26th.
