He was chopping down a aniftll tree, when the axe fllippod and cut hist thigh, and he ble4 to death in a few minutes. He was a member of the Takaka Mounted Rifles. Auckland, Ootobnr 24. Jobn James Mitchell, who has rela* * tives in Palmarston North, attempted to commit suicide yesterday by shoet--3 ing himself in the head with a revalrer. He was tikm ti the hospital, and is 5 now progressing favourably, though * the bullet is tot yet extracted. Mitchell had be;n unemployed for soma* * time, and it is alleged had been drinkl ing lately.
