Botha's commandos have been driven back towards Ermelo. ' The local commandos dispersed the moment the British columns came in " contact with them. . An effort by the enemy to break through the cordon south ofOalvinia was frustrated. ' Oonstibulary posts between the rail- ' ways stretch from the Wilge river and Greylingstad, showing the extension of ' civil administration. ' A number of Boers dressed in khaki ' captured one of Pilcher's patrols at 1 Smithfield. 1 The death sentence passed on Botha, 1 one of letter's commando, has bean ; commuted to penal servitude for life. The Johauuus burg correspondent of the Cologne Gazette commends British civil administration, and considers the army has accomplished everything pojsible, and that no other ciuld have dose better. DE WET'S HANDICAP. Received 23, 11 pm. London, October 23. The Boers in Holland dealare tbat De Wet does not lack for meD, but lacks arms aod ammunition. SCOTLAND'S SENSIBLE ATTITUDE. Received 23,11.20 p.m. London, October 23. A correspondent at Aberdeen writes that no Scottish newspaper countenances the clamour of the London press regarding the conduct of the war, although ScotUndV loss of men has been thrice that of England, and more than doubt that of Ireland. Mr St. John Brodrick has replied, warmly appreciatirg Scotlan"s spiri% and saying that Great Britain's task is arduous, and will be best met by patient cheerfulness.
