Mr. Sfddon has received the following cablegram from Colonel Porter, commanding the Seventh New Zealand Cootingent: <: Sendt' is by n. convoy. We are campaigning away from the posts. We engaged Botha's force on 4th, sth, and 6th October, Casualties alrfady reported. The wounded are dpiog well. The battle on the 6th lasted eight hours. The enemy, 2000 strong, were defeated at all points. The New Zealanders charged and cap'ured the first portion of an important hill on the enemy's right flank, and held it under exceedingly heavy fire, concentrated from the front and flanks. T he New Zealanders were first in action, their courage and reliance being highly estimated. They are consequently always employed to carry out the most hazardous duties. The Contingent's casualties were two killed and seven wounded. The rest are well,"
