A TRANSPORT IK DISTRESS. m TON ASSOCIATION Adklaidk, October 19. The steamer City of Lincoln has pot in here in distress. She had a terrible experience when en route from Melbourne to Durban with 700 remounts aboard. Bbe encountered a terrific gale off Gape Borda, compelling her to lay to for the sake of the horses, which were dreadfully knocked about and in ( frantic terror: The main crank shaft broke, and the vessel lay helpless in the trough of the sea, which broke right oyer her, starting her bulwark?. Horse boxes were ■wept overboard, a'nd down the hole where the horses were, lay piled up heaps cf dead and dying animals. A paß'ing steamer stood by, and when the gale moderated somewhat twice got hawsers aboard, but these broke, and she had to give up the attempt. Eventually after thrpe days in the gale, the Lincoln's engineers managed to disconnect the broken engine, and fitted the machinery to enable them to steam to port at low pressure. The ves«el p' esented an extraordinary appearance*, her decks being piled up with dead and riving horse*. Altogether she lost about 200 horses.
