A young ■tan, Alfred Adrian Pike, was charged on a warrant for wife desertion, issued by his wife, and was ordered to pay 16b a week towards her support, and find security totalling .£BO, in default mxmontbV imprisonment. Kke declared he was unable to find security,' and was removed to the cells. Shortly afterwards he shot bimaalf with a revolver, which somehow be lad managed to feerete, inflicting a dangerous wound in the head. According to the told by his •wife they were married at. Auckland on September 16th, and left for Sydney by the Zealandia. Soon after their arrival her husband began, to ill-treat her, and left her without funds. Being destitute, and believing he intended to leave for South Africa, she took out a warrant. Amongst Pike's effects were a numl>er of discharges from American WWfol vessels.
