NAUTICAL INQUIRY.
FKB FBKBS ABSOCJATIOK Ohbistchurch, October If. A nautical inquiry into the collision between the steamer Indradevi and the schooner Lily was held at Lyttelton to-day. The Court held every precaution had been taken •by those on the steamer to avoid a collision, and discretion had been shown by the auxiliary second officer under the circumstance*. On the other hand, the Court found it j quite impossible to believe the evidence of those on deck of the schooner, and considered great uegleet and want of discretion on the part of the mate had been shown in not earlier calling the master, who, it appeared to them, had been placed in a moat false position. Offing to the mate not holding a certificate they were unable to punish him in the way in which they considered the s tfety of the travelling public demanded ; but they ordered him to pay £5 5s towa.'d the cost of the inquiry.
