VOLUNTEER NOTES.
The battalion parade at Haweia promises to be one of the largest musterc of volunteers be!d in Taranaki for some years. We laarn from the actingajutant (Cap'ain Taunton) that the Hawera Mounted Rifles intend to bpresent, and have invited the Stratford, Opunake, and Okato Mounted Rifles. The open country around Hawera is very suitable for some good practical work to be done by such a composite force. The Mayor of Hawera intends proclaiming the day a public holiday. At Hawera, tbe insurance policy for £SOO presented by Mr G. A Storrar, of the Government Insurance, for best score at 600 yards, was won by Sergeant A. H. Duxfield, with 32 out of a possible 40 points. The next highest, scores were Troopers J, Hunter and Maule, 31; Corporal Lmder, 28. Eleven others fired.
A squad of the Guards went up for class firing on Thursday afternoon, some fair scores being made. During the claFs-firing on Thursday Thursday afternoon, Captain Taunton put od the record at 200 yards, making ten bulls-eyes in succession with the new rifle. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wanqanui, October 11. A meeting of shooting men was htld this evening, when it was cjecided to form a Wanganui and West Coast Rifle Association. The idea is to bold annual meetings and to nncounge shooting. Officers of corps from New Plymouth to Olaki were elected officials.
