THE TIME-TABLE QUESTION.

Our Sirattord f/iends appear to havt got greatly excited over the question of the railway time-table, and with characteristic energy intercepted the Traffic Manager on his W3y to New Plymouth, and protested against any alteration of the proposed time-table. Both the Stratford papers indulge in very extravagant articles on the question, and profess to be astonished that New Plymouth should attach so much importance to the proposed alDeration. Yet to read their remarks one would think the very existence of Stratford depends on the delay proposed and the crossing of the trains at Stratford. We have a better opinion of the stability of Stratford than this. At the same time we feel sure there is no desire in New Plymouth to interfe e with existing arrangements. o.ir action is as much in the interest of Str.ttford as of New Plymouth, and the commercial prosperity of the farmer depends greatly on every facility being afforded torsach New Plymouth, whe e the port is situated. Our evening contemporary also has a milk and water article on the subjoct, and the lay down and die policy advocated is quite characteristic of him, excepting when abusingthe Government or the Borough Council. This is not going to be the policy of the News, and we intend to persist in what is a fair and just protest until success attends cur efforts. Starting the mail train five or teu minutes earlier and accelerating the speed of the up train another fiv« or ten minutes between New Plymouth and Stratford ge's over the whole difficulty, The railways belong to the, people, and why should the public, the' local bodies, banks, bubinefs people and others have to upset their arraDgemenc« when tha railways should he run to suit their conveniecce ?
