GARRISON BAND BALL.

A fine, though rather warm, night was exparienoed for tbe Gairison Bud Ball on Thursday night. The attend* anoe was very good, though it loit ft good deal by comparison with tba bug* Citizens' Ball which was held soma little time since. NevertheleM, the Garrison Band has every reason to ' congratulate itself upon the result of [last night's function. When all returns are in there should be a sub* etantiil balance in hand, The Drill Hall was tastefully decorated with flags and greenery, and presented a very pleasing appsaranoe. The band instruments were ranged qq the seaward wall. Altogether th* scene was a very animated and cheep* ful one, the bright dresses of the ladies and tbe various uniforms of bandemeik and volnnteers combining to produce % kaleidosoopic picture which, viewed! from the gallery, was very Among those present were the llayor I (Mr E. Dockrill), Lieut.-Oolonel Ellis* Captain Taunton, Lieutenants Cock I and Hooker. Several other volunteer | were unable to attend. It was,, .however, rather notioeable that the. I volunteers, both town and country, did', not attend in stronger force, seeing; that tbe ball was held for the benefit ol: an important factor of the Taraneki . , Battalion. Mr. McKinnon Bain's orchestra waeresponsible for the muMC, which was, as usual, excellent, and with the floor- . in first-class order the dangers were lothTooeaae "tripping the light fantastic toe " till the " wee sma' boars of the morning. The M's.O., Sergeant Lister, Corporal Gold water, Bindamac ACcObmisßc and Mr. E. Humphries, were'most attentive to their duties, sparing no>paufc to secure the enjoyment of all. Last, but not by any means least, wet come to the supper. This was laid oufc in a most tempting manner in the* supper-room, whioh was nioely deooiated for tbe occasion nith flags, etc.* , by Mesdames Dockrill and E. M.. Smith. These ladies, with Mesdameßs' m Haig, Bennett, Hill, Richards andt Miss Nicholl are deserving of greatpraise for the whole of the arrangements in connection with the supper.. They ifera ably assisted by tbe members of the ball oommittee, who all 1 worked hard to make the whole affair the thorough tuccus it was. The Band wishes to tbank tbe townspeople who responded n generously in providing the supper, which was all donated, and certainly on a moat lavish scale. Altogether the ball—the first of the Taranaki Garrison .Band—must be admitted to have been an unqualified success, and we bops it wtUl be the forerunner of many more as thoroughly etjoyable.
