io the editor. ; Sib,—l am glad to see " Shop-' 'keeper's " letter in this morning's News. Surely the business people of New 1 Plymouth will throw off their apathy j and unite agunst this injustice. Here * *® attempt to strike a fatal blow at oar tradesmen, and also cause very groat inconvenience to a large cum Her of country settlers, yet no organised efibrt is b6ing made to prevent it. I venture to say that if the same thing bid been attempted in ei her Hawera or Wakgasai, the newspapers would have been filled with letters, and both papers would have-joined hands in protesting against such an injustice. Both the towns above mentioned 'have, evidently, been alive to their own inbecause it will be noticed that tl* morning train is timed to arrive, in the CMe of Hawera 15 minu'es, and in the ease of Wanganui, 10 minutes eeriier than at present. Your suggestion that the train should be timed to arrive in New Plymouth at 10.45 is an excellent one, and that should be the time we should unite in demanding. The position we fhou'd take up is that when additional facilities are provided for leaving town, inc eased facilities must also be ghen to»e' tiers end ethers to come into town to transact their business, Hoping others will take this important matter up, end that something will be done to give effect, to Shopkeeper's suggestions without delay. -I am, et«., Phogbbss. But, —I wish to endorse the opinion given in your leader of the 3rd r« the i new railway timetable, that while fairly ! suitable in other respects, the late 1 arrival of the morniog train is a very . cerioas defect; bat I would go farther and Pay that this defect .more than 1 nullifies, to the business people of this i district, any good arising from the i daily express serviee. By this train ; people from Hawera upcome to trans•et ..business and attend the Court*, while the country members of some Bine local bodies oome in to their various meetings, all of which take place at 11 a.m n and -this innovation will metn ' that they, will have to come into town s ♦he night before and thus incur needless expense. Again on Saturdays ' when the Banks dose at 12 noon, most ' country settlers have business to trans- *' aet and cheques to receive before thev ' can go to a Bank, but this they will have to be mighty quick about as they ' cannot be in town before 11.30, thus 1 leaving them htlf-an-hour for the ' whole bnsines*. Already shopkeepers f here have to keep a lot of cash on hand 1 on Saturday for the purpose of oashing J large cheques for perhaps a few shil- 1 lings, pr else lose a sale, or have to J give oredit not asked for. The only reason I can see for" the alteration is 1 that the trains may cross at Stratford. 1 bat rarely they can cross just as well < at Midhirst, or Tariki, or Norfolk-road 1 ■s before, while looking at the present 1 time of leaving Hawera, viz., 7.10 a.m., '» it seems in every way suitable.
