The Columbia was on the* port tack, forced about by the Shamrock. The wind increasing the Shamrock did grand windward work, and gained an advantage. The rivals ran homewards with booms to port and spinnakers to starboard. A superior Filipino force att icked a company of American infantry on the island of Sainar, while the latter were breakfasting. The Filipinos killed 48, and wounded 11 Americans, besides capturing stores and ammunition. Only 24 Americans escaped.
